Shell Game
Egg tempera on gesso panel, 9" x 12"
Sold

At first glance, it appears that this work is painted using only two colors plus white--gray-blue and burnt sienna. Many more colors, however, are buried in the dozens of layers of egg tempera marks and scumbles. This is what gives the medium its translucent quality. I especially enjoyed finishing off this rather spare composition with the lace edging on the cloth, which is a table runner my parents brought back from a trip to Ireland. I paint the lace on last, after the rest of the background is complete.
