Washington Square
Egg tempera on gesso panel, 18 x 24
SOLD

When I was a young artist I lived in New York City. I befriended a group of street performers--Joe the mandolin player, Andy on concertina, and John the ventriloquist and puppet maker. They performed in many public spots. Our favorite remains Washington Square. When I wasn't working in my studio, I sometimes joined them to pass the hat. I had completely finished a detailed silverpoint drawing in preparation for this painting but had a strong feeling that something was missing. I realized what it was--pigeons. I added them to the composition before I began the painting.
