Lamentation
Egg tempera on gesso panel, 24 x 30"
$6,000
The idea for Lamentation first appeared in a vision in my mind--as do many of my works. The year before I had spent several months working on a joyous depiction of whales cavorting in nearshore waters. There is a sad side of this nearshore behavior. I worked in the marine conservation field for many years and followed the work of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey. Friends and family posed for the mourning women. My original vision pictured the scene from a greater distance. It took me a while to decide on the scale. My final composition allowed for enough detail in the figures while still showing the relative size of the whale. This is large for an egg tempera painting and took six months to complete.
