Primary Colors is a detail taken from a self-portrait I painted in oil in the late 1980s. When I painted this version, I was relatively new to egg tempera and wanted to compare the results from the two media. When it was done, I realized that I had composed the painting using the 3 primary colors--red, yellow, and blue. I especially enjoyed painting the straw hat, which I bought in Florence many years ago.
